Autoimmunity

Stylized 3D Y‑shaped antibodies (immunoglobulins) floating on a soft pink‑purple background; one central antibody in sharp focus.Autoimmunity is the presence of antibodies and T lymphocytes that react to normal parts of a person’s system. In other words, if someone has an autoimmune disorder, their immune system attacks healthy portions of their body.

It’s widely accepted that people with ME/CFS exhibit immune system dysregulation. In some cases, this dysregulation shares features with autoimmune disorders and is connected with impaired cognitive function and inflammation.

OMF’s ME/CFS Collaborative Center at Uppsala has found an upregulation of autoantibodies in up to 70% of people with ME/CFS in a preliminary study. Read more about their investigation into autoimmunity in ME/CFS here.
