Biobank

The image shows a gloved hand holding a metal rack filled with blood collection tubes. The tubes are labeled with barcodes and contain varying levels of blood. The person handling the samples is wearing a light blue protective gown and blue gloves.

A biobank is a large collection of samples (e.g., blood, urine) that have been gathered over time—often through clinic visits or research studies—and are securely stored for future research.

Utilizing biobanks that have well-characterized samples may be a critical step in getting a better understanding of what’s going on in ME/CFS and how to treat it. Testing these samples on a large scale might help determine patient subtypes and enable a precision medicine approach to clinical management of the disease.

Part of OMF’s mission is to identify a biochemical signature for ME/CFS that can be used for diagnosing the condition and evaluating the effect of treatment. To this end, OMF is pursuing a large-scale ME/CFS biomarker study (BioQuest), which will utilize samples stored in several biobanks.
